Restaurant naan at home needs real tandoor heat - a kitchen oven simply doesn't get hot enough. A backyard clay tandoor cooks naan, roti and kulcha on its walls in a couple of minutes and roasts chicken tikka, seekh kebab, paneer and vegetables on vertical skewers in the heat rising from below. GULATI makes the largest home tandoors available in the USA; here's how to choose yours.
1. Choose your size
| Model | Size (top × height) | Mouth | Cooks for | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Family Size | 18″ × 26″ | 10″ | 4-8 people | about 110 lb |
| Medium | 20″ × 30″ | 11″ | 8-15 people | about 150 lb |
| Jumbo | 24″ × 36″ | 13″ | 15-50 people | about 280 lb |
If you regularly host big parties, size up - a larger mouth means more bread on the wall and more skewers at once. Cooking for more than 50? Look at the 34″ charcoal tandoor or the Copper Barrel Tandoor for outdoor kitchens.
2. Choose your fuel
Every home tandoor cooks on charcoal out of the box, with optional burner kits:
- Charcoal - the traditional smoky flavor. CHARBLOX blocks stay lit up to 5 hours; plan on about 5-6 lb per session.
- Propane kit (+$250) - easiest if you already have a propane tank for your grill.
- Natural gas kit (+$300; +$350 on Jumbo) - for patios with a natural gas line.
The burner is detachable, so you can switch between charcoal and gas. More detail in gas vs charcoal tandoor.
3. Set it up in your backyard
GULATI home tandoors are made for outdoor cooking. They're fully portable on a 4-wheel trolley and need no installation: roll yours onto a level, non-flammable surface on your patio, away from walls, overhangs and anything that can catch an ember. Never use a charcoal or gas tandoor indoors or in an enclosed space. A weatherproof cover (available in accessories) protects it between cookouts.
4. Cure the clay before your first cookout
A new clay pot needs to be seasoned with gradually increasing heat before you cook at full temperature. Follow How to Prepare a GULATI Tandoor for Use - it's the best way to keep the clay strong for years.

What's in the box
Home tandoors come with skewers (including extra-thick skewers for seekh kebab), 2 naan removal sticks, a gadhi cushion for slapping dough on the clay wall, a stainless steel mouth lid and GULATI special seasoning for strengthening the clay wall.
Tandoor vs. pizza oven

A pizza oven bakes on a hot floor with heat rolling over the top; a tandoor cooks with its hot clay walls and rising heat - breads stick to the wall and meats hang on vertical skewers. That's what gives tandoori food its char and juicy interior. If you want both, the patented TandoorDISC drops into your tandoor and turns it into a pizza oven, grill and stove.
